Musicologie was founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife musicians, Kay and Joseph Barker, who both began their musical journeys at the age of five, studying piano. After meeting in college, they became seasoned performers, touring across the country with their folk/pop band, Bella Ruse. During breaks between tours, they discovered a shared passion for music education while teaching private lessons, and soon realized they were as passionate about teaching as they were about performing. Their mission was clear: to make music accessible and engaging for all students.

Recognizing a gap in the market for modern, student-centered music education, Kay and Joseph saw an opportunity to create a fresh and innovative approach. Traditional studios and independent teachers often struggled to meet the evolving needs of today’s students and parents. In August 2014, they opened the first Musicologie studio in Grandview Heights, a charming suburb of Columbus, Ohio. By 2018, they expanded to a second location and partnered with Kyle Lamoreaux, their very first guitar teacher and the visionary behind Musicologie’s proprietary software and scheduling system. Together, they streamlined operations to support the brand’s sustainable growth, positioning Musicologie as a leader in the music education space.
